Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call: The New Look Andrew McCutchen

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

New colors, same McCutchen

Andrew McCutchen debuted his new colors on social media yesterday. The San Francisco Giants twitter account posted a video of McCutchen in his new uniform. To be honest, it looked and felt wrong.

It was only a matter of time before fans were forced to see McCutchen in the orange and black but it still is a gut punch. Andrew McCutchen has only dawned the black and gold for his entire career, so this is quite a change.

Pirates fans have had a lot of reasons to be angry this offseason but the video above likely will only cause sadness. However, I am sure there is an element of excitement too. Pittsburgh sports fans tend to root for popular ex-players, so I imagine the fans are wishing McCutchen well as he begins the next chapter of his career. That doesn’t mean it isn’t strange seeing Andrew McCutchen in a Giants uniform.

A Harsh Reminder

Baseball is a game and in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter. Nothing puts that in perspective like what is currently happening to Elias Diaz. The Pirates catcher’s mother has been kidnapped in Venezuela. Frank Coonelly said in a statement:

Baseball is a large part of all our lives and at times it feels so important but nothing compares to this. It’s good to be passionate about the game but it’s vital to remember that at the end of the day baseball is a pleasant distraction. Even when the team is losing and the owner isn’t spending enough. We wish Elias Diaz and his family nothing but the best and we pray that his mother has a safe return.
