Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call: The Offseason is as Cold as the Weather

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

Slow and Steady Drives Us Crazy

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to bed at a standstill this off-season. However, they are far from the only team. It seems like all of Major League Baseball is in a holding pattern at the moment. I cannot remember a more underwhelming offseason. Since the Shohei Ohtani signing and Giancarlo Stanton trade, there has been a whole lot of nothing in terms of major transactions. The Pittsburgh Pirates will never “win” any particular offseason but usually, they at least make some minor deals that make at least a little noise.

The Pirates do not need to make any moves but that is a risky approach. Neal Huntington could choose to return basically the same team as last season but when you’re coming off 75 wins, that’s promoting on hard mode. A baseball club survives on fan interest, attendance, and ratings. Taking a 75 win team and choosing not to add or improve it doesn’t give fans a lot of reason for optimism. Yes, the team could improve because internal pieces take steps forward but that’s really putting a lot of eggs in one basket. The Pirates are a small market team so homegrown talent should carry the load but it’s okay to add some external players to share the burden.

There is still enough time between now and Spring Training for the Pirates to add some players but the longer the way, the more I am expecting them to simply stand pat. If that is the road they choose to go down, then I would expect you’ll see continued fan apathy. The Pittsburgh Pirates were an afterthought for two decades and they followed that up with three excellent seasons. However, management cannot sell the fans on 2013-2015 forever.
