In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates
Just like they drew it up
Last night’s 11-1 win over the San Diego Padres was an absolute elixir for an ailing Pittsburgh Pirates team. Though the series was already a foregone conclusion, the explosion by the team in the seventh inning could propel the club through the rest of their west coast trip.
About that seventh inning. There was something for everyone, with the Pirates scoring eight runs on five hits, four walks and two hit batsmen. The club batted around in the inning.
Cole has a dominant start
Gerrit Cole had easily his best start of the 2016 season. Hitting great velocity with movement to match, Cole went for six innings of seven-strikeout ball. Allowing just four hits, Cole began to tire in the sixth, but got out after 97 pitches, 60 for strikes.
After seeing Francisco Liriano struggle in his outing against the Padres, many Pirates fans exhaled at the sight of one of their two top horses performing well.
Everyone plays a role
The win was also notable in that most of the key run producers in the Pittsburgh Pirates lineup had a hand in it. David Freese, Josh Harrison and Francisco Cervelli had two RBI apiece. Gregory Polanco, John Jaso and Starling Mrate each went 2-for-5 and accounted for four of the team’s 11 runs.
