In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates
I am the Rain King
The Pirates weren’t able to play game two of their series against the Cincinnati Reds because of rain. No make-up date has been announced. Normally this would be extremely disappointing, but I imagine most of Pittsburgh was watching Game six of the Penguins playoff series, so it was nice of the Pirates to plan a rain out so fans didn’t have to pick which game to watch.
The one annoying aspect of the rain out is we have another day to stew over just how annoying of a loss the Pirates had on Monday. They didn’t play a bad game, but Great American Ballpark struck again and that is something the Pirates must adjust to because the team needs to be better against the rebuilding Reds and Milwaukee Brewers if they hope to stay in sight of the Chicago Cubs.
There’s a storm coming
Once the Pirates finish up against the Cincinnati Reds, they will make their way to Wrigley Field to take on the Chicago Cubs with revenge on their mind. The Cubs had their way with the Pirates last week in PNC Park, so it would be nice to play better this time around.
No team has been better than the Chicago Cubs so far this season, but it’s a marathon, not a sprint, so I am not ready to crown the Cubs World Series champions just yet. It’ll be interesting to see how this Cubs team handles their first major slump because it is coming. No team ever goes through a 162 game season without a poor streak of baseball. They are still the clear cut favorite in both the division and the league, but there is still a long way to do this season.
Baseball talk around the web
Paul Zeise of the Post-Gazette has an excellent read regarding Andrew McCutchen, Gerrit Cole, and why they don’t necessarily need to be Pirates for their entire careers.
Baseball America projects that Pitt pitcher T.J. Zeuch will be the Pirates’ first round pick in June’s draft.
Former MLB player Brandon Laird won a year’s supply of beer by hitting a home run off a brewery’s sign.
