Pittsburgh Pirates Wake-Up Call – Rays Pull a Trade

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Tampa Bay Rays shook the baseball world out of its winter doldrums, pulling off a surprising trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers – long known to be in the market for a second baseman – acquired Logan Forsythe in exchange for the 2016 #24 prospect overall, SP Jose De Leon.

The deal is an interesting one. Forsythe has been a nice player over the past two seasons, but by and large many were surprised that the Dodgers would give up such an important prospect in De Leon.

The Pittsburgh Pirates may have been inadvertently affected by this deal in two ways. First, the Dodgers and Pirates could have lined up as nice trade partners by sending Josh Harrison to the west coast. After their pursuit of Brian Dozier fell flat, the Dodgers reportedly then have explored the secondary market for a right-handed second baseman.

Though Forsythe has more power and can also play multiple positions, the Dodgers may have been just as intrigued with Harrison, whose contract Los Angeles also could have avoided by utilizing the opt-out after two years.

Second, the Tampa Bay Rays may now be looking for a future second baseman of their own.

The Pittsburgh Pirates balked at sending Kevin Newman as part of a package to the Rays last summer, but – though a long shot – moving Forsythe may re-ignite talks between the two .
