Pittsburgh Pirates Wake-Up Call – Speed Bump Or Worse?

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

Last night, the Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Milwaukee Brewers. You can read our TnTs from the game right here, but the question many fans are waking up with is a sobering one.

Did many jump the gun in thinking that the team was back in Wild Card contention, or is this loss merely a speed bump? By virtue of the Giants and Mets both winning, the Pirates lost a game in the race and are now 4.5 games back.

The answer may lie in the middle. At 76-76, the Pirates are still in the race. Last night’s win was a bit demoralizing for many, as it should be. As we all gauged the club’s September schedule, we noted the tough stretch that they end with. The importance of stacking wins before starting the gauntlet that is facing the Nationals, Cubs and Cardinals could not have been understated.

Yes, the Pittsburgh Pirates won the series in Milwaukee. But, if there was ever a time to be greedy, it was yesterday.

Nova Talks Heat Up

Pirates Breakdown will undoubtedly have more on this later today, but in case you missed it – yeah, right – Bill Brink of the Post-Gazette is reporting that the Pittsburgh Pirates have broached initial contract talks with SP Ivan Nova. As Brink notes, the club and Nova’s agents went back and forth and continue to talk.

We will have more analysis on this news, but as we’ve stated before, the Pirates should have the financial means to sign Nova.
