In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Good work, young man
Spring Training doesn’t really matter all that much. However, it’s always good when an important young player has a good start. Pittsburgh Pirates outfield prospect Austin Meadows has been outstanding so far this spring.
In his first three games, Meadows is slashing .625/.667/2.167 with one home run and seven RBIs. Yesterday in the Pirates 4-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, Meadows hit an absolutely towering home run:

Austin Meadows isn’t really playing for a job in Pittsburgh. It’s almost guaranteed he will begin the season at Triple-A and that’s probably okay. Meadows had an up and down season in 2017. He struggled to stay healthy and his hitting suffered as a result. The Pirates are a team in transition and a lot of their future success hinges on Meadows. It may seem like Meadows has been a prospect forever but he is still only 22-years-old.
The Pirates are very conservative with how they advance their prospects and at times that is infuriating. However, the Pirates could afford to be patient with Meadows as they had a fairly stacked outfield during his entire Minor League Career. The Pirates still have a fairly solid outfield core with Starling Marte, Gregory Polanco, and Corey Dickerson. However, Meadows time is coming. Dickerson is a short-term stopgap and that is a good thing. Dickerson is a very productive Big League outfielder and if his run with the team is successful, that benefits both the Pirates and Austin Meadows. Austin Meadows will eventually be a Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder but for now, it’s best if he focuses on being a star for the Indianapolis Indians.
