In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
T’was the night before the World Series
The World Series begins tomorrow as American prepares to pick which big market they will root for. I would wager that most people are rooting for the Houston Astros since they’re a fairly homegrown ball club and have never won the big one. However, the Dodgers haven’t been to the World Series since 1988, so it isn’t like they’ve been a consistent player in the Fall Classic lately. Both teams have very likable personalities and are full of marketable young players. So this World Series isn’t as cut and dry as many would expect.
The 2017 World Series is the first series to feature two 100 win teams since 1970 when the 108 win Baltimore Orioles took on the 102 win Cincinnati Reds. This fact should make this World Series a true toss-up as a 100 win team is rare, TWO 100 win teams playing in the same World Series is Mew-Two rare.
The Astros enter this World Series as the first team to ever win a pennant in both leagues since they previously won the NLCS all the way back in 2005. Houston will likely be America’s choice in this series because the city still has a lot of sympathy for the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. Not to mention, the Astros have Jose Altuve and who doesn’t love that beautiful short superstar?
The Astros also have been to the abyss as they kind of started the trend of completely tearing down a system during a rebuild. The Astros rebuild was so famous that Sports Illustrated referred to them as the 2017 World Series Champions back in 2014. Can the Astros prove Sports Illustrated right? I think the Dodgers may have something to say about that.
California Dreams
The Dodgers steamrolled their way through the 2017 Postseason as they swept the Diamondbacks and beat the Cubs in five games. They look like the team that at one point was on pace for 120 wins. Obviously, no team is that good but the Dodgers did manage to win a paltry 104 games.
This Dodger team is the same big spending behemoth as the previous decade but for whatever reason, they feel more likable. Maybe it’s Justin Turner‘s big red beard, Yasiel Puig‘s infectious smile, or their All-World rookie, Cody Bellinger?
Whether you like this team or not, no one can deny that if they finish the job, they will go down as a truly historic team. It’s rare that a team goes from post to post as the best team but Los Angeles is just four wins from doing just that.
