Pittsburgh Pirates Wake-Up Call: Via Chicago

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates

Off day hype

The Pirates were off yesterday and spent the day in Chicago in advance of their three game series against the Cubs in Wrigley Field. This series feels big. Bigger than probably a series in mid-May should, but that’s the nature of the games when the odds on World Series favorite is in your division.

There is still a lot of baseball left, but people have already crowned the Chicago Cubs. I am surprised they’re even going to play the rest of the season. Lets just give the Cubs their first World Series title since 1908 and all focus on the NHL playoffs. Since everyone knows the team that’s playing the best in May ALWAYS wins the World Series in October. There’s no debate about who the best team in the league is right now, but a lot can change between now and the end of the season. Lets not declare the Cubs champions yet.

Hidden Heroes

If you didn’t read the article from Pirates Breakdown’s own, Joy Frank-Collins about Joe Klimchak, the Pirates’ in-game host, do yourself a favor and give it a read, it’s absolutely fantastic.

Mr. Klimchak is one of those guys you see every Pirates’ home game and maybe you don’t think about him much, but he’s a vital part of the PNC Park experience and quite possibly the best in the business. He’s also a super nice and humble man. That’s a winning combination if I’ve ever heard one.

Baseball talk from around the web

David Dorsey of Newspress wrote about Pirates’ infield prospects Kevin Kramer and Kevin Newman.

Phil Mushnick of the New York Post says baseball is getting worse and it’s MLB’s fault.
