In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates
Anything Going On Today?
Today figures to be a regular day for Pittsburgh Pirates fans.
Okay, of course we all know that’s not true. Today will mark Tyler Glasnow‘s major league debut as he gets the call up for the start. Perhaps more importantly, the Pirates can go for a four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with a win today.
Glasnow’s promotion symbolizes the crux of general manager Neal Huntington’s methodology in building up this team’s system. While the endless debate about the GM’s drafting record will rage long after today, all of that falls away at 1:45 PM. Fans will finally get to see someone they have heard described in almost mystical prose. Will they be disappointed or delighted? Can they see past any initial struggles the tall right-hander may have?
In any event, it is exciting to see a consensus top ten prospect in all of baseball make his debut. All eyes in Pittsburgh Pirates fandom will be glued to their televisions and radios.
A Four Game Sweep?
As mentioned, the Pittsburgh Pirates can tie up a four-game sweep of the Cardinals today.
If they pull it off, the team will have its first four game sweep since 2012. Four-game sweeps are very rare, with a 14.24 percent conversion rate when a team wins the first three games as per MLB Sweeps.
The planets may be aligning for the Pirates to pull it off. The club could use the momentum of Glasnow’s start to propel them to their eighth-straight win and the sweep. Matt Carpenter figures to be down today while the Cardinals determine the severity of his oblique injury. The bats are swinging, the bullpen is firing and Clint Hurdle showed an urgency to win last night.
This team is firing on all cylinders right now, making a four-game sweep somehow likely.
