In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates
Like it or hate it, the World Baseball Classic has had some intrigue over its first week of action. And there will be even more for many Pittsburgh Pirates fans starting today.
Already we have seen an Israeli team that is surprising a lot of observers and some interesting matchups. We also got a glimpse of a powerhouse Dominican Republic team as they roughed up prized prospect Tyler Glasnow.
Today the United States team kicks off play in Pool C today at 6 pm EST. Canada, Colombia and the aforementioned Springfield Nuclear Power Plant Softball Team Dominican Republic join the US in the pool.
Pittsburgh Pirates stars Andrew McCutchen and Josh Harrison take the field for the United States. 3B prospect Eric Wood will suit up for Canada, and has already hit two home runs for his home country in an exhibition against the Yankees. The Dominican Republic features Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco, with Ivan Nova listed in the pool of Designated pitchers.
So can the USA get out of this pool alive? Chances are good, as the top two teams from each pool advance after round-robin play.
For more light reading on the official WBC rules, Wikipedia has a very detailed entry.
Good luck to the United States and whatever country you the reader may be rooting for.
