In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates
#LateNightBUCN
The Pittsburgh Pirates were off yesterday in preparation of their west coast road trip, starting tonight as they take on the San Diego Padres. Pirates Breakdown will of course have a complete preview of the series later today, but for now we all must prepare for #LateNightBUCN.
West coast trips are always such a difficult thing for fans as games don’t start until 10pm and don’t usually end until well into the morning, but that’s the price you pay for following a team for 162 games, sometimes it takes a late night cup of coffee just to stay up and watch your team.
The Padres are a team in a weird place right now. They aren’t rebuilding, nor are they expected to contend in a very good National League West, but despite the 4-9 record, the team does have talent and noted Pirate killer Jon Jay (.292/.343/.365/.707 vs. the team) could very well be in the lineup for the Padres.
Gung-ho for rehab assignments
Jung Ho Kang saw his first live game action since that fateful slide from Cubs outfielder Chris Coghlan last September ended his rookie season. Kang went 0-for-3, with two strike outs, a walk and a run scored. Kang looked to have no ill effects from the injury, and ran the bases after drawing a walk.
In the field, Kang looked well-adjusted. Though his timing was nowhere near ready to face major league pitching, Kang showed good patience at the plate, which is always nice to see early in a rehab assignment since as we learn from Spring Training, patience can be the most difficult skill to shake the rust off of.
There is no time table for Kang’s return to the big club, but I wouldn’t be surprise to see him back in PNC Park before April turns into May.
Whether Kang comes back in late April or early May is irrelevant since it’s amazing that he’s even this close. His injury was something no Pirate fan will forget and it’s a testament to just how incredible of a work ethic Kang has. His home debut will undoubtably be an amazing moment for him and the fans.
