In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
More of the Same
Normally when you hear the phrase more of the same in regards to the Pittsburgh Pirates, it’s negative. However, today it’s most definitely a positive. Yesterday, Adam Frazier had another multi-hit game as he went 2-4 with a home run and two RBIs. He brought his spring average up to .400 and his OPS is a whopping 1.104. It would be unrealistic to expect him to put up these numbers for a full 162 games but he is earning a starting spot for the team when they break camp and head to Boston for Opening Day.
Adam Frazier is more than just a Spring Training darling as fans remember what he did during his time in the Big Leagues last year. He provided a spark to a stagnant offense and seemed to handle Big League pitching better than anyone expected. The only question about Frazier’s game is his defense. He’s never been a plus defender but at a certain point, the bat is too good to worry about limited defensive skills. If he is just passable then he MUST play every day. Especially if he continues to hit well and be a catalyst at the top of the order.
Super Nova
Another player that provided more of the same last night was Ivan Nova. He had another stellar start as he went four innings, allowed one run on three hits and struck out six. Nova has been picked as the Home Opener starter and he is showing why he is worthy of the honor. This spring he has pitched to a 1.29ERA with 13 strikeouts in 14 innings. Ivan Nova struggled in New York last year but thrived during his time with the Pirates and he seems to be continuing that trend. Most fans had him signing elsewhere this past offseason but the front office learned from the J.A. Happ fiasco and made sure they brought back the pitcher they apparently fixed the previous season.
I am really excited to see Nova’s Home Opener start. I am confident he should get a huge ovation as fans are pumped he is still wearing a Pirates’ uniform. Gerrit Cole earned the Opening Day start in Boston but there is no doubt that Nova belongs on the PNC Park mound on April 7th.
