In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates are 11-4 this season, a season just under ten percent completed. They have yet to lose a series. They have been devouring bad teams. Even the loaded Chicago Cubs couldn’t shake this team.
Almost everything has gone right for the Pirates since the season began. The offense is scoring runs. Starting pitchers are piling together quality outings. The back end of the bullpen has been solid. Middle relief pitching has been the only disappointment early on.
How long can this last?
Looking at the schedule, there is no reason to think this shouldn’t continue. Starting today (barring the weather), the Pirates will host the Nolan Arenado-less Colorado Rockies for three before traveling to Philadelphia for a four game series against the Phillies. To finish April, they host the Detroit Tigers for three followed by the St. Louis Cardinals for three more.
If the Pirates can win eight of those 13 games, it would put their record at 19-9. At that point, we could start to discuss whether this team is legitimate or not. I want to believe it now, but I’m not quite there yet. I need to see more.
Injury bug
Josh Harrison exited yesterday’s game in Miami after being struck by a pitch near or on his hand. His frustration showed. I can’t blame him. Getting hit on the hand has to be extremely frustrating just because of how fragile that area is. You could miss 6-8 weeks like it’s nothing.
There is no current word on Harrison as he is still being evaluated.
Francisco Cervelli was also hit on the hand yesterday but was able to stay in the game.
