In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Things started out promising for Pirates pitcher Joe Musgrove against the Boston Red Sox Tuesday.
The right hander escaped the first inning unharmed, causing Mookie Betts to fly out to start the frame and inducing ground balls off the bats of Andrew Benintendi and Hanley Ramirez.
It wasn’t until the second inning that things started to take a turn for the worse as Musgrove was making his second start of the spring.
After striking out J.D. Martinez to start the second, Musgrove gave up a double off the bat of Mitch Moreland followed by an RBI single by Eduardo Nunez. One batter later, Rafael Devers belted a two-run blast to center field to make it 3-0 sox.
Musgrove finished the outing having given up six earned runs on eight hits while striking out two in four innings. The less than stellar outing comes five days after he allowed two runs on one hit while striking out five and walking three in 2.2 innings.
Though the two outings were less than ideal, Musgrove still has time to fix some things and prepare for the start of the regular season. He will also have time to get healthy heading into the year as he has dealt with shoulder discomfort this spring.
According to Adam Berry of MLB.com, Musgrove expects to pitch five innings Sunday against Toronto. Acquired in the Gerrit Cole trade, Musgrove will likely earn a starting rotation spot over the likes of Tyler Glasnow and Steven Brault.
