Our Daily Wake Up Call gets you ready for the day with a look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
We normally use this space to get Pittsburgh Pirates fans ready for the baseball day with a look at the current hot topics surrounding their favorite ballclub.
Today, we are going to take a different track.
The reveal that Jameson Taillon underwent surgery for suspected testicular cancer was a shock to many. It is always startling to see someone such as Taillon – an athlete performing at the highest stage – suddenly seem very mortal.
If there is any silver lining to Taillon’s diagnosis and treatment – other than the fact that his prognosis should be favorable – is that it may have given many Pittsburgh Pirates fans newfound perspective.
A quick glance at Twitter and other social media saw an outpouring of support for Taillon, with on-the-field concerns rightfully taking the back burner. And that’s as it should be. Baseball gets in your blood. It’s a game that grows with you, starting with playing catch in the back yard and sticking with you through the major moments in your life and the time in between.
We mark our time by the game. We remember our lives when Sid Bream slid. We measure time by different team eras. The daily nature of the game provides us with an ever-present companion as we go through life.
But it is just a game.
As usual, 93.7 The Fan host and PBD contributor Josh Taylor said it best:
In lieu of #LiveLongProsperAndThrowStrikes for @JTaillon19, I'll just say live long & prosper for now. The 3rd will come in due time.

Let’s Do Something
Cancer has touched millions, and I am willing to bet that many people reading this have been affected by it in some way. Whether it’s a wife, husband, brother sister, friend, relatives, colleagues…it seems that the disease does not discriminate.
In light of Taillon’s diagnosis and incredibly positive attitude towards it, Pirates Breakdown will be donating a large portion of its advertising revenue for May to local cancer-centric institutions in the Pittsburgh area.
If you have been touched in one way or another by the disease, we encourage you to do the same. If you’re unable to donate money, you can donate your time . The Allgheny Cancer Institute has information readily available on how to volunteer.
PBD sends its collective thoughts and prayers to Jameson and his friends and family for a speedy recovery.
