In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates-Mets game was postponed yesterday, much to the joy of Penguins fans, but to the disappointment of those awaiting Neil Walker‘s first time back to Pittsburgh. I, for one, was certainly looking forward to it, because I always liked Neil Walker as a player, and I’m sure the ovation he would have received from fans would have brought much joy to Walker. For as much as Walker may have disliked the way the organization dealt with him towards the end of his tenure with the Pirates, he’s a Pittsburgher through and through, and I feel confident in saying he holds no ill will against any of the players on the Pirates or the Pittsburgh fans as a whole.
Then again, he seems to be liking his time in New York:

I wouldn’t have expected him to be so adamant about his love for New York, but it doesn’t bother me. His time as a Pirate is forever over, and once he finally steps on the field at PNC for the first time as a Met, we can all hopefully, finally, move forward.
Since the Pirates didn’t play last night, I though it’d be a good idea to check out how the rest of the National League is shaping up. First, although it’s far too early to be worried about playoff positioning, the Pirates do sit tied for the second Wild Card spot with the Dodgers, and are 1.5 games behind the Mets for the first Wild Card spot. A couple upcoming series against the Mets could affect that positioning. Then again, home field, while exciting, hasn’t done the Pirates many favors in the past couple Wild Card games.
It also seems like the competition for the playoffs in the National League will come down to the Cubs, Pirates, Cardinals, Nationals, Mets, Giants, and Dodgers. I’m not buying into the Marlins and I’m certainly not buying into the Phillies, who are the first two teams on the outside of the Wild Card looking in. I also think the Cardinals are the weakest team out of that bunch. Needless to say, however, that the playoff push will be an exciting and tense one this season.
Baseball Talk from Around the Web
- In order to make room for Jhonny Peralta to come off the disabled list today, the Cardinals set down Kolten Wong to Triple-A. Wong is batting .222/.306/.286 this season with just one home run. I don’t think anyone saw that performance coming.
- The MLB Draft is set to get underway in just two days, so make sure to check out Keith Law’s latest mock draft (ESPN Insider required).
- CBS Sports listed their top 100 players in Major League Baseball right now, and the top Pirates’ player isn’t Andrew McCutchen (not surprisingly).
