Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – Hit the Road

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates

Where the rubber meets the road

The Pittsburgh Pirates will embark on a seven-game road trip against the Texas Rangers and Miami Marlins. The Marlins series is notable, as the team was to play in Puerto Rico before plans were scuttled due to the Zika Virus.

The Pirates have slowly but steadily shaken the label of a “bad road team.” After going 37-44 away from PNC Park in 2014, the club is a combined 57-45 over the past two years, including a 12-10 mark in the current campaign.

While on the surface that record may seem underwhelming, it is actually more or less in line with MLB trends over the past few years. In 2015, the best road record belonged to the Cubs at 48-33, but many teams fell back to the 42-44 win range.

The Pirates will not face Rangers’ IF Roughned Odor, whose appeal was heard by MLB and reduced by one game to seven. Odor will now begin serving that suspension as the appeal process has been exhausted.

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins

We would be highly remiss if we did not congratulate the Pittsburgh Penguins on clinching a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs by beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 last night at Consol Energy Center. Pittsburgh has always been known as a city where its sports teams and stars support each other, and that was on full display throughout the entire Eastern Conference Finals.

Baseball Talk on the Web

    • Over at FanGraphs, Carson Cistulli is back with his semi-annual baseball broadcaster rankings. The rankings are crowdsourced by FG readers and are always an interesting read. Do you agree with the Pittsburgh Pirates’ ranking?
    • Hector Olivera of the Atlanta Braves was suspended 82 games for a domestic violence incident. It is encouraging to see MLB take a hard line on this issue.
    • And now, something completely different:
