Handicapping the Race For the Second NL Wild Card

New York Mets

Record: 59-59

Remaining Opponent Win %: .498

New York has struggled since the All-Star break and their 11-18 record shows it.  With Yoenis Cespedes on the DL, the Mets’ offense has been close to non-existent.  They have lost five of seven games and are three games back of the final Wild Card spot.  The Mets began a ten game road trip last night with a 10-6 loss at Arizona.

Why They’ll Make the Playoffs:

If the Mets hope to reach the postseason for a second straight year, they must use the same formula that got them there last year.  Pitching and Yoenis Cespedes.  Even with Matt Harvey out for the season, the Mets still have an excellent starting rotation with Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard leading the way.  With Cesepedes set to return to action this Friday, the Mets could get going.  If that offense gets around to scoring some runs, the pitching staff has the ability to lift this team into the playoffs.

Why They’ll Miss the Playoffs:

On the flip side, if New York can’t find a way to hit the baseball, they have no chance.  deGrom and Syndergaard are great, but even they can’t throw a shutout every time out.  The Mets have not been playing good baseball lately.  Last year Yoenis Cesepedes catapulted the Mets into the playoffs hitting a home run almost every night.  He is going to have to do the same this year.  Can Yo make the transition from the links onto the baseball diamond and help the Mets reach the postseason?  He going to have to.

Next, we’ll look at an upstart team that was recently dealt a crushing blow.
