Players pick Manning top player

An ESPN survey of NFL players saw them select Manning as the game’s top player and the QB they most trust in the clutch.  And it’s not close

Best player?

Let’s cut to the chase: Peers overwhelmingly herald Peyton Manning (44.9%). “Every time we play him, I’m reminded of all the things he does, the way he handles the game,” says a five-year pro. They like Drew Brees (19.1%), as well. But No. 3 is no star quarterback. In fact, he is the bane of a QB’s existence, the only guy with at least 10 sacks in each of the past four seasons. “DeMarcus Ware [8.1%] is a nightmare to block,” says a lineman who has tried. “When he’s on, you can forget about it.”

With two minutes left, you need a game-winning drive. Who do you want leading it, Brady, Brees or Manning?

The players’ pick for best in the game is also their pick for best with the game on the line. Manning, who led a record five straight fourth-quarter comebacks last season, takes 64.1% of the vote. Tom Brady beats Brees for second, 20.3% to 15.6%. “You just know Brady’s gonna find a way to win it,” says a rival defender.
