FOOTBALL*Movies* On DVD
Friday Night Lights
Saying Football in Texas is a religion might the biggest understatement ever told.
This movie was based on the New York Times Best Seller, Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, written by H. G. Bissinger.
It follows the story of the 1988 Permian High School Panthers football team as they made a run towards the Texas State Championship and it documents the coaches, players of a high school football team and the Texas City of Odessa that supports them…and its obsessesion with the team!
The character Boobie Miles conjures memories of the Marcus Dupree’s Story on ESPN Classics’ The Best that Never Was.
Remember The Titans
True story preached by Coach Herman Boone -Denzel Washington- that sends out a message about racial equality during very, very turbulent times in our country.
An entire community divided by racial discrimination, manages to find one common bond…Football!
Playmakers
The NFL and the Powers That Be ignored every censorship rule on our planet and strong armed ESPN into taking this dramatic series off the air years ago because it painted players, coaches and the team’s owner on this show in a negative, but realistic, light.
ESPN Executives did not want risk billions of dollars in revenue for a Television Show, so they gave up their right to express themselves and freedom of speech for money.
The writing on Playmakers was years ahead of its’ time. It clearly focused on the drug abuse, criminal behavior, domestic abuse etc…that runs ramped on the NFL nowadays.
It just does my heart good every time I watch it…just thinking that maybe some NFL Executive who grew up with a Silver Spoon in his mouth might be out there somewhere angry knowing that every Football season, a show they had ban, because of morality issues!, from Television years ago refuses to go quietly into the night.
