Temple football led by third-year coach Matt Rhule is having it’s best year in program history, reaching 10 wins for the first time since 1979 and the Owls are set to face Houston this Saturday for the American Athletic Conference Championship that may lead to major bowl implications. However with success comes schools from power conferences trying to pluck mid major conference coaches away from their schools and Matt Rhule is on the radar of many of these schools. The most recent report was Matt Rhule could be heading to Missouri, but it seems Mizzou’s defensive coordinator, Barry Odom has become the front-runner for the job to the relief of Temple fans everywhere. Though Missouri won’t be the last to try and snatch away Matt Rhule from Temple, but we cannot let this happen.
Matt Rhule is the best thing that happened to Temple and their football program since Al Golden was the coach of the team and breathed life back into a program that was on the brink of extinction. After decades of struggles and being the laughingstock of the FBS, Temple finally has gained the respect it deserves and it’s all because of what Matt Rhule has been able to do with his players and how he’s been able to have them buy into his philosophy. The city of Philadelphia is a football city and there is no reason why it cannot be a college football city as well. Philly has a bad reputation for not really caring about college football, but that’s because they didn’t have anyone to root for up until now and this Temple football team is the feel good story of the city and the nation. But it doesn’t have stop after this year with the help of the alumni and the city, we can make this football program legit. I have no idea if building an on-campus stadium is going to happen or not, but it could definitely help if the funds can be attained for it. The other thing is these power conference schools are probably throwing big money at Matt Rhule and it is time the alumni showed their support for Coach Matt Rhule and kick in some more money so our beloved coach will stay, we all know he deserves it.
I can’t imagine this Temple football team without Matt Rhule and I hope I don’t have to because we need him so the success of this program will not be short lived or a one-hit wonder. Philadelphia is a city dying for a legitimate college football program and Matt Rhule has already put the building blocks in place to make it an achievable goal. From a fan who loved you from the moment Temple named you head coach, I hope you stay Matt Rhule and keep this program whole.
