Pointed Comments by Yancy Gates and the New Blog Poll

The Miami preview is coming down the tracks, but first let’s hit up this week’s blog poll and some comments made by Yancy Gates yesterday. It seems ever since I unloaded on Bill Koch that one week  he’s gotten a lot of high quality stuff. One of the most quality things were these comments by Yancy Gates regarding the team. Take it away Yancy.

I didn’t feel like we were going to be 5-0 just based on knowing my team. I think we started the season with success without earning it with being ranked. I know my teammates. We’ve never handled success well here.”

That’s called throwing the cards on the table. He also added this.

This is my senior year, I don’t get these games back. I sit up in the room. I could be watching TV but really not even paying attention to it because the past game is running through your head trying to think about what do I need to do different and what can the team do different to be the team we’re capable of being.

It’s still early. We’ve only played five games, but pretty soon it’s going to be 10 games and you can’t keep saying it’s early. It has to turn around quick, like tomorrow quick. We don’t have no more time to waste on it. We’ve got to grow up and get it done.”

Let’s hope that Yancy’s message gets through to the other guys. Yancy has seen UC ranked the past 3 seasons, only to fall from the graces of the top 25. The team with Lance Stephenson jumped into the top 25 after a good trip in Maui, only to lose to UAB and Xavier and not make the NCAAs. Last year, UC started off tremendously in the non-conference slate before tripping up early in Big East play and losing that number. This year, well, you know. I would have added “And get me the ball in OT, bitch,” but that’s why I’m not Yancy Gates. That and I’m 6 feet tall and have 2 low post moves that I blatanly stole from video I saw of Kevin McHale from when ESPN used to show those NBA championship shows. Let’s hope Gates is the catalyst for some change.

As for the blog poll this week, I cowardly dropped Houston to 3. I don’t want a rematch, but I played the blind resume on CBS and voted for Alabama. That isn’t going to matter when Oklahoma State loses to OU this week. I don’t know why I moved South Carolina up so many spots. 4 new teams this week, West Virginia, Arkansas State, Cincinnati and the return of Southern Miss. Gone are Notre Dame, Tulsa, Penn State and Georgia Tech.
