Bill will stay around at least until 2012, and after that Chris will take over with his dad as a consultant. Woo, as they say, hoo.
The contracts of team president Bill Polian and son Chris have been extended “through the 2012 season and beyond,” Irsay said Thursday afternoon.
Chris Polian’s new deal doesn’t alter his daily responsibilities. But after serving as vice president of football operations four seasons, he’s now general manager and will assume the day-to-day operation of the franchise whenever his father steps down.
Neither Polian was available for comment.
Irsay extended the contracts to maintain continuity, similar to how he put the pieces in place as the Colts transitioned from coach Tony Dungy to Jim Caldwell.
“There is no seismic shift. Nothing will change anytime soon,” Irsay said. “But continuity is important to me.”
Bill Polian, 66, has been the Colts’ president since 1998. Whenever he determines he no longer wants to run the team, he’ll become a consultant to help ease the transition to Chris Polian, 38. Irsay indicated Bill Polian will likely continue to run the team at least through 2012.
