We have already been told that wins and losses will not matter for the Sacramento Kings this season. If there is a secondary set of standards that the team will be judged, the Kings have yet to release them. And with a major victory over relocation already complete, any accomplishments this season will be icing on the cake for most fans.
But there needs to be goals and standards and a way to judge what happens over an 82-game schedule.
Last week, our readers thought the team would win between 31-36 games. Would a win total in that range constitute real improvement?
With DeMarcus Cousins, Isaiah Thomas, Greivis Vasquez and Patrick Patterson all entering the final year of their rookie contracts, there is a lot riding on this season for the Kings’ young players. Ben McLemore is also eyeing the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award, Jimmer Fredette is still trying to show he belongs and Jason Thompson is once again trying to fend off a challenger to his staring position.
There are veterans fighting for their NBA lives and a player in Luc Mbah a Moute that’s hoping to overcome substantial injury woes. Assessing this situation will be a first time owner, general manager and coach.
You can quantify statistical growth of the players on the floor, but sometimes stats lie. There are good players on bad teams and there are players that score in bunches for horrible teams.
