Alonzo Gee’s time in a San Antonio Spurs uniform was short-lived.
In fact, you may not even remember he was a Spur. He only saw 18 minutes for the team last season, and 15 of those were in a blowout win against the Philadelphia 76ers. Now Gee is the starting small forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers and he’s taken his opportunity to become one of the NBA’s most improved players. This season, he is averaging 10.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists in 29.2 minutes per game.
The Cavs host the Spurs tonight, and Gee will get a chance to show off his skills to one of his former teams. Coach Pop is impressed by what Gee has accomplished, and is happy to see him succeed.
“Alonzo is a testament to what hard work can do,” Popovich said. “He has always been one of those before-and-after practice guys — he’s paid his dues. It’s great to see him being able to take advantage of the opportunity provided to him in Cleveland.”
Obviously, the Spurs are set at small forward and Gee isn’t going to be one of those players that fans say “man, what if he was still around?” but he has definitely improved and made a name for himself since he left San Antonio.
Gee is one of the team leaders in scoring and now with Kyrie Irving going to play after all tonight, the Cavs will need Gee to step up more so if they’re even going to have a chance against the Spurs.
Look for Gee to take it up a notch tonight to showcase his skills against his old teammates.
