Portland loves their marathons. The next opportunity to run in Portland is right around the corner. It’s Cinco de Mayo time! Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a celebration held on May 5. It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla.
Portland Cinco de Mayo, Half Marathon, 5k and 10k Run / Walk, Kid’s Half Miler – Sunday, May 6th 2012
Beginning in 2010, a 1/2 marathon was added to the festivities. It’s an out-and-back course that takes runners from the starting line at downtown Portland’s World Trade Center at the corner of Southwest 1st and Taylor. From there, runners make their way through the city’s Pearl and Old Town Districts, where they take in scenic views of the Willamette River that flows through the city.
It’s hard to say what the weather will bring for the event. This is Portland after all. Weekend forecast is for sun, but be prepared for spring rain (most Portland runners are).
The Cinco de Mayo after-race party really doesn’t differ much from our typical after-race party on the surface. As usual, all participants receive two tasty Lagunitas brews, great food (from Pepino’s Fresh Mexican Grill for this event) and live mariachi music. Portlanders stick around longer than usual dancing, drinking, eating and having a great time with old friends or meeting new ones.
