Walking around Providence Park on summer nights, one might expect to see some crowds of people flocking to a Portland Timbers game. The Timbers, as we all know, have quite an avid following. However, last Wednesday, the crowds were there for a different reason. Our hometown women’s football club, the Portland Thorns, were playing. The electricity in the air was readily apparent and the stadium and surrounding streets were filled with beautiful red and black splashes of color as everyone was sporting the team’s colors. The diversity of the crowd was quite surprising as well, as everyone from young children to older folks were in attendance, and every age group in between. The nearly overflowing stadium was buzzing with activity and excitement.
How exciting is it that a city like Portland, not even originally known for soccer, has not only just our beloved Timbers but now has the very apparently thriving Thorns as well? Only in its third year, the Thorns are an exciting new team. Back in 2013, the team’s inaugural year, they won the National Women’s Soccer League Championship. Not only is the team doing well on paper, but just seeing the crowd at the stadium, it is readily apparent that the Portlandians are excitedly supporting the Thorn-y ladies. Currently, the heat is on for this talented team, as they play an away game against Kansas City for a spot in the playoffs. If you’d like to check out what all the fuss is about for yourself, they will be playing the last home game of the season on Sunday, August 30 at 6:30. Hopefully, we will see another team get pricked by the Thorns.
