First off, I want to mention that Tim at Pirates Prospects has done an awesome job of breaking the news of just about every major draft signing the Pirates have made in the last couple weeks. He’s all over all of these stories and if you’re not paying attention to his blog, you’re missing out.
And second, Tim has been putting together the clues that point towards the Pirates potentially having a deal already in place with Jameson Taillon. I’ll re-stress what Tim does in his post; that none of this is official yet and even if a deal is done (and it is still an “if” at this point), it likely won’t be confirmed by either the team or Taillon until the weekend at the earliest. But I’d rather hear rumors that a deal is done than rumors that one won’t get done. Now that we’re getting awfully late in the game I’d characterize the relative silence on both the Pirates’ end and Taillon’s end as a positive thing. If negotiations were breaking down I’d imagine that either Huntington/Coonelly or the Hendricks brothers would take to the media pretty quickly at this point.
As for Stetson Allie, I thought UNC’s freshmen move-in date was this Saturday and that might provide us with some clues. Unfortunately, I’m a clueless grad student who spends too much time in lab to know how things actually work on campus and it turns out that freshman move-in isn’t until the 20th, which is of course after the August 16th signing deadline.
In any case, I will reaffirm my strict position of not panicking about Allie or Taillon until after the deadline has passed. There’s just nothing that we can do about it until then.
