The Nets began their 2015-16 preseason slate of games tonight at home against Fenerbahce Ulker, a Turkish team that current Net Bojan Bogdanovic played for before heading over to the NBA. However, the much-maligned Nets — who Vegas predicted to win just 28.5 games this season — lost 101-96 at the Barclays Center in their first game since a Game 6 playoff loss to the Hawks last May.
Thankfully, the game was neither televised nor broadcast on the radio anywhere, so the embarrassment of losing to a far inferior team from the Middle East wasn’t able to watched by people not as the game. But, we still have a box score, so here are some notes and stats from the disappointing preseason defeat:
- Fenerbahce’s starting shooting guard — who scored 17 points — was Bogdan Bogdanovic. He was drafted by the Suns in the first round of the 2014 Draft. The Nets’ starting shooting guard was Bojan Bogdanovic, no relation. He went 0-4 from the field and scored three points. Names are weird.
- Former NBA players Jan Vesely, Ekpe Udoh and Luigi Datome were impressive for Fenerbahce. Also, former Atlanta Hawk Pero Antic is on the team, but didn’t play.
- Thomas Robinson (12 points, 16 rebounds), Brook Lopez (18 points, four rebounds, four blocks and a three-pointer!) and Wayne Ellington (16 points, 4-7 from three) were the Nets that really stood out. Robinson was brought to Brooklyn for his rebounding and Ellington for his shooting ability, so those guys started their Nets careers on the right foot.
- Thaddeus Young (12 points) and Jarrett Jack (11 points) were the only other Brooklyn players to reach double figures in points. Only one assist for starting point guard Jack, though.
- Rookie Rondae Hollis-Jefferson went 2-6 from the field but did have two steals, so he showed off his renowned defensive ability in his first NBA game. Fellow rookie Ryan Boatright made his debut as well.
- Dahntay Jones, Chris Daniels, Sergey Karasev and Donald Sloan were all healthy, but did not play. Chris McCullough (knee), Andrea Bargnani (hamstring), Markel Brown (oblique) and Willie Reed (quad) were all out with injuries.
- Losing to a European team is never good, but remember to not take too much from a preseason opener, even if the Nets gave up 48.7 percent shooting from the field and 52.4 percent shooting from three. Brooklyn continues its preseason Thursday night in Auburn Hills against the Detroit Pistons.
