Potential Special Teams Jersey Numbers for Jalen Ramsey

It’s been well-known for some time that Jalen Ramsey would be making the switch back to cornerback from his “star” position this season, but Ramsey could have another new role in 2015 — kick returner.

According to Tomahawk Nation, it is an idea that FSU seems serious about. The problem as Tomahawk Nation reported, is that Ramsey shares the same No. 8 with the Seminoles’ other kickoff returner, Kermit Whitfield and players with the same number are not allowed on the field together.

The university’s athletic department confirmed to Tomahawk Nation that Ramsey is looking into wearing a different special teams number while keeping his No. 8 on defense. It is not known what that number will be, but Ramsey should look to wear a number not worn by anyone on defense to avoid keeping someone off the field in the event of a turnover. If there is a quick possession change, Ramsey may not have time to switch out jerseys.

Here is a list of potential numbers Ramsey may consider wearing on special teams:

No. 6

Aside from Deion Sanders’ retired No. 2, it’s the only single digit number that is unoccupied by a defensive player this year. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Matthew Thomas was slated to wear the number, but Thomas has been ruled ineligible.

No. 31

As a freshman in 2013, Ramsey wore the No. 13 since No. 8 was occupied by defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan. Cornerback Marcus Lewis will wear 13 this year for the FSU defense, but 31 is simply 13 backwards.

No. 88

No. 88 is simply adding a second eight to Ramsey’s current jersey number. Tight end Mavin Saunders wears it for the FSU offense, but he and Ramsey likely won’t be on the field together.
