As a team, this Ohio State Buckeyes squad was expected to accomplish a lot of what last year’s team did, and in most circles was picked as the team to beat this year. Last year’s senior led squad didn’t suffer its first loss of the season until February 12th @ Wisconsin. This team lasted until December 10th @ Kansas, but has lost a very disappointing three of its last five, including two back to back at home. In order to right the ship, and win the regular season conference crown, they have to beat a very good MSU team that’s rolling – even with its recent loss @Indiana. The Buckeyes are coming off a very hard-fought victory and momentum builder against Northwestern in Evanston.

Draymond Green has already said his piece for B1G POY honors and may just be making a great argument for the National POY award as well. Averaging a double/double on the season he’s near the top in scoring at 16.1 ppg and is the leader in rebounding at 10.1, which includes a monstrous 8 rpg on the defensive glass. Coach Izzo seems to always have a workhorse that can be depended upon to do what has to be done and Green doesn’t disappoint. I don’t like many opponents’ players, but I like Draymond Green.
Jared Sullinger came back for his sophomore year because he was committed to finishing what hadn’t been done last season. In his own way he wanted to take care of things this year and not let his senior, William Buford, leave the program the way last year’s seniors did. Losing games can do some bad things to people who aren’t use to it. As evidenced by discussions this past week, Sullinger regained his focus and took care of business. He has an opportunity to do something very special and has the teammates to do it. He has to go into East Lansing with the mindset that he will put up with anything to gain a much-needed win.
The rest of the Buckeyes need to do their thing and do it effectively. Aaron Craft needs to continue to be the defender and floor general he is. DeShaun Thomas has become the consistent offensive output type of player we had all hoped, and he needs to continue it. William Buford needs to stay in his comfortable place and ignore the nay-sayers. He is a great player and has to have a big day on his terms – not the fans. Lenzelle Smith Jr. has been a pleasant surprise all year and really has to be a shutdown type of player today. He also needs to be huge on the perimiter on offense and defense. The bench needs to be more productive than they have been all year for the Buckeyes to win tomorrow. I’d like to see more time with Evan and Jared together for a good four minutes to see how that helps.
Dennis Hopson’s Keys to the Game
Ohio State has to establish the floor from the very start. It is Senior night in E. Lansing, so they can’t allow Draymond Green to get going because he does so many things as a player. Ohio State has to play inside / out. Because of MSU’s defense we need Jared to dominate the paint so it can free up the shooters on the perimeter. Ohio State has to play the game on their terms which means they have to take advantage of MSU on both ends…Defend and get shut downs on defense and get easy baskets on offense. Ohio State will have to play through MSU’s crazy fans and keep their poise throughout the whole game.
