Preseason 2014 Game #5: Pittsburgh Penguins

2014-12-19 11_00_16

Once again we decided to do a quick scouting recap. Enjoy!

Forwards:

Matt Calvert: Played his normal spark plug role, saw time on the PK and PP.

Brandon Dubinsky: Only took one shift in the third. Assume that he was taken off for precautionary reasons with game getting slightly chippy.

Simon Hjalmarsson: Invisible on the ice. Never stood out as doing anything good or bad. Just there.

Brian Gibbons: Great goal. Got behind the defense a couple of times. Tough to handle.

Alexander Wennberg: Strong on the puck. Unbelievable poise. Smooth assist to Gibbons.

Oliver Bjorkstrand: Loved his creativity. Still too slender to play in NHL this year. A lot of untapped potential.

Sean Collins: Grinder. Going to always be a tweener. Not skilled enough to be in the NHL but good enough game to impress in the AHL.

TJ Tynan: Fast and forceful on the forecheck. Breakaway shot was a product of his handwork and tenacity

Corey Tropp: Should’ve asserted himself more amongst prospects but only seemed to blend in with the others.

Dana Tyrell: Played sparingly. Forecheck was strong when on the ice.

Michael Chaput: All around the puck once again. Defensively aware. Helped start breakouts multiple times.

Josh Anderson: Net front presence was nice. Didn’t dictate game like he had in the past.

Defense:

Fredric St. Denis: Lifetime AHL player. Struggled with exiting the zone.

Cody Goloubef: Best defensemen tonight. Steadying presence at times.

Will Weber: Caught flat footed a couple of times. Lateral movement lacking.

David Savard: Although Savard is a shoe-in for opening night he look lazy at times fully acknowledging the exhibition nature of the game.

Austin Madaisky: Created a couple of plays offensively. Most impressive of the AHL bound defensemen.

Brett Ponich: One fight and a whole lot of time in his own end. Not the best night for Mr. Ponich

Goaltenders:

Sergei Bobrovsky: After being shaky at first, Bob settled into a rhythm and was able to keep the team in the game until the very last seconds of the game.

Summary

While the team didn’t look particularly impressive today, it is important to note the resiliency of the young players who closed out the game. Although it was an exhibition game they decided to fight and draw the game within one. Multiple opportunities then ensued ensuring that the team wouldn’t give up without a fight. A lasting impression for the front office as more cuts are coming down the turnpike.
