The Saints will host their final preseason game today. By the time you’re reading this I’ll be on a morning flight from Las Vegas (friend reunion, fantasy football live draft party) to New Orleans in time to take my 5 year old son to his first Saints game ever. I really hope my flight isn’t delayed or he’ll be crushed. Any positive vibes you can share to make sure I get back on time is great appreciated. Here’s what I’m looking for during the game I’ll hopefully be in attendance at:
1. No serious injuries.
I know you’re floored to see this one again but it’s not going away until the preseason ends. So you can assume the spoiler alert that preseason game #4 will carry the same. The positions in particular we really want healthy besides Drew Brees are running back and safety since C. J. Spiller’s start date keep getting delayed and we don’t have confirmation Jairus Byrd has a pulse.
2. Who is on the outside looking in that makes a big play?
We’re pretty clear on the 53 man roster, give or take. There’s probably 6 “bubble” guys that are up for debate. Besides that we know for the most part who will be cut. That is until someone makes a huge play. You see, sometimes in preseason that’s all it takes to transform a player’s career. Look at Pierre Warren. We all assumed he was dead to rights until that interception which revitalized his chances of making the roster. Who will make a big play to save their chance at a roster spot?
3. Any pass rush to hang our hat on?
The pass rush has been abysmal through two weeks. If it wasn’t for one pass rush by Kikaha I’m not sure the Saints have a single hurry through two preseason games. Having a good day in terms of sacks would go a long way towards tempering concerns. Let’s hope that can happen.
4. Penalties, again!
While the penalties were slashed in week 2, they were still extremely high and approaching double digits. Discipline remains a major issues and I’d like to see this corrected asap.
5. The receiver battle continues.
This is still one we should be watching closely. Outside of the top 2, so much uncertainty remains. At this point it seems clear Nick Toon is out of the picture. That leaves Brandon Coleman, Willie Snead, Seantavius Jones, Josh Morgan and Joe Morgan battling for 3 spots – most likely. Who stands out and who are the odd men out?
