Three things to ponder

1. Jason Thompson’s hunger

Thompson’s minutes have been inconsistent, but his effort has not. The big gobbled up 13 rebounds in 27 minutes Wednesday and narrowly missed a double-double in the Kings’ second preseason contest. Thompson has something to prove after being benched in favor of Patrick Patterson last October, and his current fervor on the boards is what the starting lineup needs.

2. The real Derrick Williams

Williams’ game on a given night is like snapping a wishbone. Some nights, he drives to the hoop like a freight train, and his jumper is sound. Other times, the 2011 second overall pick ghosts around the perimeter and is ignored in the offense. We saw both versions of Williams on Wednesday, and only consistently delivering the former will secure him a substantial role.

3. Must-win game

Maccabi Haifa B.C. may be the former club of Dallas Mavericks guard Gal Mekel, but they’re not to be confused with an NBA roster. The Israeli squad is 0-8 against Association teams since joining league exhibitions in 2010. If Sacramento falls to the foreign invader, humiliation will be an understatement.
