Problems with the new NCAA football postseason

It’s official now, that the college football season has gone ahead and set up a 4 team tournament to finish the season. To be totally honest, I don’t care for it. Yes, I understand that the tide was steering football towards a playoff, but for a few fundamental reasons, I don’t like this decision.

It’s too soon: Rather than coming up with a perfect solution, it seems to me that the NCAA did as little as possible to appease those unhappy with how things were. Adding just two more teams was as close to their way as possible while still giving in a little. Rather than finding a GOOD solution, they simply gave in. Both sides.

It’s chosen by a committee: At least the rankings were transparent. Sure, the computer system was convoluted, but at last for most of the season, teams knew where they stood. Having a closed door meeting to select teams in a tournament this small smacks of impropriety.

It’s still not proven on the field: Conference winners, those teams who have done everything asked of them through the season, still aren’t necessarily going to get to this post season format. There is nothing you can do to guarantee a spot in the tournament, especially in a smaller conference or a lower profile program. Nothing. Think of it. At least if you won the Big Ten, for example, you are going to the Rose Bowl. If you went undefeated, you probably got at least a shot in the BCS. Until every team starts the season with a chance at a national title, the system is flawed. Simple as that.
