While New England Patriots’ rookie center Bryan Stork celebrated his first Super Bowl victory on Sunday, former Florida State golfer Brooks Koepka was celebrating his first PGA Tour victory as Koepka won the Waste Management Phoenix Open by one stroke over Bubba Watson, Ryan Palmer and Hideki Matsuyama.
Koepka entered Sunday three strokes off the lead behind Martin Laird, but shot a 66 in the final round in Scottsdale to finish at -15 and win his first career tournament. Koepka eagled the 15th hole, a par 5, to grab a share of the lead.
Koepka entered the 18th hole with a one-stroke lead and parred the final hole with a short tap-in. Matsuyama had a long birdie putt on the 18th hole to try to force a playoff, but his shot curved right of the hole.
The event may be the first victory of Koepka’s PGA Tour career, but the 24-year-old Florida State alum has finished in the top 10 in each of the three events he’s played in this year. Koepka does have one victory on the European Tour.
