A number of former Florida State stars playing professionally had a big week on the field including Buster Posey, who went 9-for-23 with a pair of home runs for the San Francisco Giants, but one FSU star who recently made the transition from collegiate to professional did something no Seminole had previously ever done.
The Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week for the week of April 27th through May 3rd is former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, who became the highest selection ever for a FSU player in the history of the NFL Draft.
On Thursday night, Winston was picked first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Winston became the first Seminole ever to go first overall and surpassed defensive end Andre Wadsworth, who went third overall to the Arizona Cardinals in 1998, as the highest Florida State player ever selected.
In two years as Florida State’s starting quarterback, Winston went 26-1 as a starter, leading FSU to two ACC championships and the 2013 national title. Winston became the youngest player ever to win the Heisman Trophy in 2013 and finishes his Seminole career with nearly 8,000 yards passing, 65 touchdown tosses and 28 interceptions.
Winston will likely make his NFL debut on August 15th as the Buccaneers visit the Minnesota Vikings in their 2015 preseason opener. The regular season for Tampa Bay begins September 13th versus the Tennessee Titans.
