Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week: Jameis Winston

For the first time since being selected first overall in this year’s NFL Draft, quarterback Jameis Winston failed to throw for 200 yards, but when all was said and done, Winston found a way to lead his Tampa Bay Buccaneers team to a road upset over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Winston is the Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week for the week of October 26th through November 1st after leading Tampa Bay to a 23-20 overtime victory in the Georgia Dome.

Winston was 16-for-29 passing for 177 yards and a touchdown. Winston also rushed for 24 yards and a score on three carries.

With the game tied 20-20 at the end of regulation, Winston marched the Buccaneers 68 yards in 15 plays to set upConnor Barth’s 31-yard game winning field goal in overtime. Winston hasn’t turned the ball over in three games and with him at the helm, the Buccaneers have already eclipsed their win total from last season.

Toney Douglas, G New Orleans Pelicans (NBA)
After being cut by the Indiana Pacers in the preseason, former Florida State guard Toney Douglas was signed by the New Orleans Pelicans and shined in his season debut. In a 134-120 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night, Douglas finished with 17 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Douglas was 7-for-12 from the field and knocked down his only 3-point attempt.

Devonta Freeman, RB Atlanta Falcons (NFL)
Though the Tampa Bay Buccaneers managed to keep him out of the end zone, Atlanta Falcons’ running back Devonta Freeman accounted for 131 yards of offense in Sunday’s 23-20 loss. Freeman carried the ball 21 times for 88 yards and also caught six passes for 43 yards in the loss.

Sean Gilmartin, P New York Mets (MLB)
In his postseason debut, former Florida State pitcher Sean Gilmartin retired both batters he faced for the New York Mets in Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday in a 7-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals.
