While Clevan Thomas made a strong bid for a second straight honor with two interceptions, the Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week award comes on the diamond, but from the minor leagues. The top professional performer from Florida State this week is minor league pitcher and former first round pick Sean Gilmartin.
Gilmartin earns the award for the week of June 3rd through the 9th for his outing on Thursday. In a 1-0 victory for the New Britain Rock Cats over the first place Akron RubberDucks, Gilmartin allowed just five hits in 7 1/3 shutout innings. Gilmartin recorded eight strikeouts without surrendering a walk in the victory and improved to 6-3 on the season with an ERA that dropped to 2.82.
Gilmartin has not given up a run in either of his last two starts which have spanned more than 13 innings. Over that stretch, Gilmartin has fanned 17 opposing batters. Gilmartin leads the Rock Cats, an affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, in wins, ERA and strikeouts this season.
