The start of the 2015 Major League Baseball season is a week away and many former Florida State stars have performed well on the diamond this spring. Some are looking for roster spots while others are looking to crack the starting lineup.

The top performer from FSU this week is a veteran looking for playing time with baseball’s most storied franchise. The Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week for the week of March 23rd through the 29th is New York Yankees’ infielder Stephen Drew.

In five Grapefruit League games this week for the Yankees, Drew went 6-for-14 at the plate with a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs.

Drew hit in four of the five games he appeared this week including a 3-for-3 effort with a double and a pair of RBIs in Friday’s 10-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. In a 10-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles the following day, Drew hit his second home run of the spring.

Drew’s big week came after a very pedestrian start to the spring. In Grapefruit League play, the former FSU standout is hitting just .244, but five of his 11 hits have gone for extra bases. Drew is fighting for playing time in a crowded New York infield. Drew struggled last season, hitting just .150 in 46 games with the Yankees.
