PSU Receives Surprising Commitment

Penn State landed an unexpected commitment from a very talented athlete Derrek Pitts. Pitts, like Penn State’s other two recent commits visited for Lasch Bash earlier this month. The 4 star according to Rivals and 3 star according to 247 Sports, was considered a heavy lean for his home state school of West Virginia, especially after visiting this past weekend.

Pitts, who is from Charleston, West Virginia, comes in at 6’1 and 174 pounds. He held 19 offers that included Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Maryland, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Pitts also recieved multiple offers in the past day that include Alabama and Florida State.

The commitment surprised me along with a lot of other people. His pledge continues James Franklin’s hot streak on the recruiting trail that started a week ago with the commitment of Brelin Faison-Walden. It should continue on August 2nd with 3 star LB Brailyn Franklin set to commit.

Pitt’s commitment was first announced by Keenan Cummings of westvirginia.rivals.com who was present for the announcement that took place at a local restaurant. Reports say the pro West Virginia crowd was not pleased with the decsion.

It didn’t take long for the leader of the 2017 class, Sean Clifford, to welcome Pitts to the family.

Pitts is a big time addition to the 2017 class and should be a big part of the defense for the four years he’s on campus. Penn State fans may also be happy to hear that Derrek Pitts is very close with the Nittany Lions’ top target Lamont Wade and the two have expressed intertest in playing together at the next level. Pitts does still plan on taking offical visits to all five finalists which along with PSU includes, West Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, and Florida.

Penn State’s 2017 class now ranks 27th nationally according to 247 Sports and it should continue to rise in the rankings as Franklin continues an impressive run on the recruiting trail.

As always stay tuned, and over the weekend I’ll break down who I think will fill the 2017 class.
