The Raider Nation has an opportunity to say goodbye to the man they called “The Assassin.” The family has publicly invited the Raider Nation to Jack Tatum’s viewing on Wednesday.
The Tatum family invites Raider fans to come and pay their respects to Jack Tatum during the public viewing on Wednesday, August 4th from 11.30 am to 5.45 pm at Fouche’s Hudson Funeral Home, 3665 Telegraph Ave., Oakland.
Tatum’s family released the following statement: “The Tatum Family thanks all of Jack’s family, friends, fans and the entire Raider Nation and Raiders Organization for the tremendous outpouring of support and condolences you’ve shown the family during this devastating time.”
For a decade, Jack Tatum patrolled the Oakland Raiders secondary as part of the famed Soul Patrol. This was one of the most feared secondaries in all of football, and at free safety Tatum was the centerpiece. It was his job to destroy any receiver brave or stupid enough to come into his area. As he said in an NFL films piece, “If they are thinking about where I am they are not focused on the ball.”
Tatum, whose visage and trademark mustache would snarl from a Raiders version of Mt. Rushmore if such a thing existed, passed away on July 27th at the age of 61. He is survived by his wife Denise and three children.
