The Oakland Athletics have lose nine straight potential series clinching games since the start of 2000. The A??s will get opportunities number 10, 11 and 12 in the upcoming week against the Minnesota Twins. It??s about time we get Billy Beane off the playoff hot seat, right?
Throughout his tenure with the A??s, by combining quantitative analysis and finding hidden gems to succeed with a low payroll, Beane has created a mini-dynasty. A dynasty of winning on a consistent basis, a formula for continuing to put a winning product on the field that all other small-market GM??s like Doug Melvin and Dave Littlefield try to model their clubs after. From 2000 through 2003, the A’s averaged 98 wins per season with payrolls that ranked 25th, 29th, 28th, and 26th in the major leagues, respectively, and even in the years Beane and Oakland didn??t reach the playoffs (04 and 05), they still had very good seasons for any team??s standards. But the formula doesn??t seem to carry over to the postseason. Why, you ask? Beane doesn??t really know either.
