Quick Thoughts on First Half of Auburn v Gamecocks

The first half is over and the Gamecocks are leading Cam Newton Auburn 20-14.  Great game thus far and it has lived up to the hype.  Kind of going like I thought with the back and forth play.  Gamecocks need to keep playing a complete game on both sides of the ball and not give a up big yards to Newton.

Here are some general thoughts:

  • Must say the opening plays had me worried and then the 50+ yard gain by Cam Newton got me angry.  But the Gamecocks answered the bell and got back in the game.  I think the play-calling from Spurrier has been really good and Garcia has managed the game well.  He has made some really nice passes.
  • Like the underneath passes to Marcus and Gurley.  Keep doing that.
  • The big reason for this lead is the ability of the Gamecocks to produce turnovers in the first half.  USC picked up two fumbles that got them in position to score.  I feel we need one more.
  • I really like how the Gamecocks are mixing it up on the offense and Marcus is having a good game (1 TD).  Brian Maddox also has played real nice and proved he can fly.  Alshon.  Well Alshon is just doing what he does all the time.  He is NFL material folks.
  • O-line is playing great for all things considered.  Keep it up boys as we need ya.
  • USC has 202 yards, Auburn 220…USC 13 first downs, Auburn 11…TOP USC 18:25, AUB 11:35…USC 4-6 conversions, Auburn 4-5
  • Garcia: 12-17 158 yards and 2 TDs in first half. Jeffery: 63 yards and both TDs.
  • Cam Newton has 97 yards rushing (73 passing).
  • Lattimore –11 carries 26 yds, 1 TD
  • The Gamecocks have played a really good half of football.  They have matched to toughness of Auburn and just need to keep up the good defense.

To win:

Gamecocks must stop Cam Newton.  Simple right.  His runs are breaking our backs but we expected it.  Ellis Johnson please fix it.

Go ‘Cocks!  Back to the game….Oh and feel this ends with USC winning 30-24.
