Jake Peavy was interviewed after the game this afternoon and asked what he thought of the controversial call at the plate that the Sox asked to be reviewed and ultimately lost. You can call Jake Peavy many things, but shy isn’t one of them. The questions Peavy was asked are in bold and his answers followed.
How are you feeling?
“Anytime you lose, it’s frustrating. It’s really frustrating when you lose and you feel like we did score two runs in the ballgame. That’s the thing I’m having a hard time with right now.”
Did you see the replay?
“I did. I watched it from in here.”
Safe?
“There’s no doubt. There’s no doubt. Clearly replay — I don’t know. I guess it can’t be close. If it’s close, they seem to stick with the call. It’s hard for me to talk right now without absolutely going off with as many times as it has happened, in New York, these are deciding ballgames. It’s extremely frustrating. We as a whole, MLB, we’ve got to get our act together because this is a joke. It’s embarrassing for fans and everybody to see. Of course he touched the plate. Of course he did. He slid dirt over the top of the plate. He got tagged after the fact. That stings.”
On not having success with replay
“We don’t seem to be getting any calls, and it’s extremely frustrating. I don’t know what’s got to happen, but something clearly needs to happen.”
What’s the problem?
” I just don’t understand how you can watch replay — what’s the holdup? I just want explanations. ‘Oh, we didn’t have the replay’ is what we got in New York. Come on. Then we’re not ready for replay, if that’s the case. Then today, when a call that obviously is close, I’ll give it to you that it’s close, but wouldn’t you err on the side of what I think we all saw, and that’s him touching the plate? It’s extremely frustrating when that decides ballgames, and we agree that replay is to get calls right. That’s the reason we agreed for this to happen. To not get them right, I don’t want to hear anybody’s explanation, I know what I see. You can’t talk me into anything different when you see what you see. Dustin Pedroia was clearly safe — albeit close, but clearly safe. I don’t know what else to say.”
Were you a proponent of replay?
“I was. Who isn’t supportive of getting calls that decide the ballgame, is what we tried to do. These calls decide the outcome of the game. Let’s get them right. I have no problems with slowing the game, even stopping the game, for that to happen. When you go through that and you don’t get the call right, which has happened on numerous occasions against us, I don’t know how you want us to have a good attitude and be all for it.”
Why so many perceived misses?
“Call it like we see it. Get the call right. That’s what we can do. I don’t know if we’re trying to protect people. I don’t know what we’re doing. But if we can get the call right, that’s why I thought it was in place.”
