Rafalski Scores Tying Goal with 0.3 Seconds Left, Wings Lose in Shootout

The only buzzer beater of the day yesterday didn’t come from an underdog shocking the world. In fact, it didn’t even come from a college basketball game. Brian Rafalski netted a goal with 0.3 seconds left to tie the score at 2 before the Red Wings lost to the Edmonton Oilers in a shootout. It was Edmonton goalie Devan Dubnyk’s first career win.

As many expected, the Wings came out sluggish after a rare three-day layoff in the middle of a west coast trip. They fell behind less than a minute into the game when former Michigan standout Andrew Cogliano put a one-time from Gilbert Brule past Wings goalie Jimmy Howard. Edmonton took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission when Ryan Whitney scored just over 4 minutes later. The Wings got one back in the second period when Patrick Eaves scored on a play where he trailed behind Kris Draper and Darren Helm before slamming the puck home. The game remained at 2-1 until the final minute, when Rafalski tied the score on a great hustle play by the Wings in the corner.

Neither team threatened to score in the overtime period before Edmonton outscored Detroit 2-1 in the shootout. Make sure to check out the following recaps for more Red Wings analysis.

Overall, I’m not surprised the Wings came out flat in this one. The inexplicable three-day layoff (Edmonton hadn’t played since Tuesday) followed by three games in four days has Wings fans scratching their heads as to what the schedule makers were thinking. I’m not surprised the Wings didn’t play well after the break, especially when they have a history of mailing games in against the NHL’s lower tiers. The Oilers also tend to play the Wings pretty tough, so getting one point isn’t the end of the world. The Wings need to get two points from Vancouver tonight to maintain some distance from 9th place Calgary before heading home for a three-game homestand.
