Two days ago, the Raiders signed DE Sam Montgomery to get a sense of where his health and attitude were and see if he could provide depth and talent on a defensive line that lacks both.
Today, the Raiders put Montgomery on injured reserve. Dennis Allen was predictably non-specific about the injury situation, saying only, “he got hurt the first day of practice so we had to put him on practice squad IR.” He did add that the injury was to Montgomery’s knee.
This is the second time (of two!) Montgomery has been injured almost immediately after joining a team, the first being an ankle injury after joining the Houston Texans for practices after being drafted in the third round out of LSU.
Allen said they thought he was talented coming out and they wanted to see where he was, physically. Allen said, “We wanted to get him in here and take a look at him to see if he's somebody that we could work into the future. And obviously he had the injury so we weren't able to get very much of an evaluation on him and had to put him on IR."
There are many indications that Montgomery does not currently have the work-ethic needed in the NFL. He showed up to the rookie minicamp out of shape and has admitted to slacking off plays in college.
There is good news on the defensive line, however. DT/DE Vance Walker took another step forward with his concussion rehab, today, and is questionable to be back on the field on Sunday. Walker has been mostly solid when in the rotation so his return will help the team, if he can make it back on the field versus the Chargers.
Speaking of that game, it was announced the game vs the Chargers will be televised locally and will not be blacked out.
Finally, Darren McFadden and Charles Woodson are listed as probable to play on Sunday. Both will likely suit up and play at this point with Woodson the more important of the two.
