Earlier today, the Raiders officially filed relocation papers to move from Oakland to Las Vegas.
This makes them the second team to relocate this off season, and the third in the last two years. The move was not unexpected, as there have been rumors of a relocation for a number of years. What was surprising was how quickly the change was made for the organization. Barely two weeks ago the team was playing in the playoffs.
This is the second time the Raiders have moved in their history. In the early 80’s, then owner Al Davis tried to move the team to Los Angeles. Unfortunately, he was blocked by the other owners. After filing antitrust lawsuits, they were able to move and call the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum their new home. Davis was known as an eccentric owner, and the current Raider’s owner is no different. That’s because Mark Davis, the current owner, is Al’s son. It must run in the family.
The Raiders had a tremendous season this year, leading their division for most of the year. Their season had promise until they lost their quarterback to a leg injury late in the season. Had he stayed healthy, they could have made a late playoff run, possibly keeping the team in Oakland. Sadly, we won’t know.
This marks the second professional sports team to call Las Vegas their home. Last year, the Las Vegas Knights were added to the NHL. They will begin playing during the 2017-2018 season.
Though Raiders fans might have to travel a bit further to support their team, there’s no doubt the Black Hole travels well.
