Raiders make roster moves

As expected, the Oakland Raiders signed Stevie Brown back to the practice sqad after he cleared waivers. They also added linebacker-safety hybrid Quentin Scott to the practice squad and cut 2009 fourth round pick Slade Norris.

Stevie Brown was the last cut off the 53 man roster prior to the season. A rumor floated on twitter that there was a rift between the coaching staff who wanted to keep Brown and the boss who wanted to keep Mike Mitchell. Brown was signed to the practice squad immediately upon clearing waivers. He was activated for the week two Rams game where he had an impressive special teams hit, however he was again waived and returned to the practice squad. The team expectes veteran Hiram Eugene to be healthy enough to fill that reserve deep safety and special teams role.

The departed Slade Norris was the Raiders fourth round draft pick out of Oregon State in 2009. He didn’t make the final 53 his rookie year and was signed to the practice squad. He was activated to the 53 man roster prior to week 13 where he saw limited action for the remainder of the season. Norris started this season on the practice squad.

Scott was a safety at Northern Iowa and was in camp with the Chicago Bears after he was signed as an undrafted free agent.

The Oakland Raiders are set to host local high school football players as part of an anti-steroid campaign.

For the second year, 100 student athletes will articipate in an NFL ATLAS and ATHENA anti-steroid training session with the Raiders. To combat the use of steroids and human growth hormone (HGH) at the high school level, NFL ATLAS AND ATHENA is implemented in 14 NFL markets and reaches 30,000 high school student athletes and 800 coaches each year. ATLAS and ATHENA are nationally-acclaimed programs designed to promote healthy living and reduce the use of steroids and other drugs among high school athletes.

Already in three area schools, these new schools will become Raiders ATLAS and ATHENA Schools and are were chosen based on interviews with program administrators and school-wide commitment from the principal, athletic director and coaches. This opportunity was created as a result of a $2.6 million grant from Redskins Owner Daniel Snyder and his fellow 31 NFL owners and the NFL players thru the NFL Youth Football Fund’s grant to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

It will be held 28 September 2010 at the Raiders facility in Alameda.
